چکیده

The aim of this paper is to evaluate several linguistic constraints as predictors of the frequency with which word order variants of double object sentences occur, as well as of the processing ease associated with these structures. We will provide corpus data and behavioural data from completion questionnaires and self-paced reading experiments that address the validity of the Dative constraint, the Animacy constraint, and the Definiteness constraint. Case is found to have an effect on the order of the objects in double object structures. However, this effect cannot be disentangled from an Animacy effect because dative and animacy on the one hand and accusative and inanimacy on the other hand turn out to be strongly associated. Finally, evidence for the validity of the Definiteness constraint is only found in the corpus data extracted from its context but not in the behavioural data gathered without context. German is generally assumed to be a language with a relatively free word order. The acceptability of a given structure is said to depend on the interaction of several linear precedence rules that refer to morphological, semantic, and information structural properties, such as Case, Animacy, Definiteness, Pronominality, and Focus (e.g., Lenerz 1977; Uszkoreit 1986, 1987; Jacobs 1988) (PR: Precedence rule, read < as 'precedes'):

Spontaneous semantic associations of German verbs: Giving ontological and functional structure to speakers’ elicited concepts

This work is concerned with an investigation of spontaneous semantic associations. We performed a web experiment where linguistic experts and non-experts were asked to spontaneously list semantic associations for German verbs. The elicited conceptual knowledge was then given ontological structure based on codes from the psycholinguistic ontology GermaNet as well as linguistic functions obtained...

Word Order Variation In German Main Clauses. A Corpus Analysis

In this paper, we present empirical data from a corpus study on the linear order of subjects and objects in German main clauses. The aim was to establish the validity of three well-known ordering constraints: given complements tend to occur before new complements, definite before indefinite, and pronoun before full noun phrase complements. Frequencies of occurrences were derived for subject-fir...

Studien zur performanzorientierten Linguistik Aspekte der Relativsatzextraposition im Deutschen

Looking at relative clause extraposition in German as a concrete example, the paper demonstrates how linguistic model building, corpus study and psycholinguistic experiments combine into an integrational research programme that aims at an improved understanding and linguistically as well as cognitively adequate modelling of human language performance. Starting from the word order theory articul...

Object and Action Naming: A Study on Persian-Speaking Children

Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...
